Companies don’t want farmers talking.  It is deliberately hidden.

Fast food.  Where it all began – 1930’s drive-in.  mcdonald’s started it.  Started like a factory, low wages, assembly lines.  Easily replaceable parts.  Uniform, conformity, cheapness.

1970 – top 5 controlled 25.  Today, top 4 control 80% of the market.

Tyson – biggest.  Redesigned chicken to have large breasts because people want white meat.  Twice as large in half the time.

Chickens never see sunlight.  Vince was going to show them the inside of a chicken house, but after multiple visits from Tyson, he changed his mind.  Dozens of farmers did the same, but one chicken farmer was okay.  Carole Morison – perdue grower.

Bones and internal organs can’t keep up with rapid growth.  Can only take a few steps.  Antibiotics put in feed.  Bacteria builds a resistance, so antibiotics don’t work anymore.  Chicken farmers become allergic to antibiotics. 

Harvest in the dark, because chicken’s don’t struggle.  Now they use undocumented latino workers who don’t feel like they belong. 

$280,000-$300,000 per chicken house.  Companies come back with demands for upgrades, or you lose contract. Farmers so in debt under the chicken company’s thumb. No say in their business, they are a slave to the company.

Earns $18,000 a year.

Illusion of diversity in supermarket.  So much of our food is a “clever rearrangement of corn”.  20 busshels an acre – today, 200 bushels are not a problem.  30% of the US land base is planted with corn.  Produce below cost of productions – paid to overproduce.

Engineer new food with all the corn.  High-fructose corn syrup.  90% contains corn or soy bean on supermarket shelves.  It’s also fed to animals.  Teaching fish how to eat corn  - talipia and salmon.  So much corn drives down the price of meat.

200 lbs of meat / person / year.

Cows not designed to eat corn – they eat grass. But corn is cheap and it makes them fat.

E. Coli – product of feed lot life.  Cows stand in their manure , and that manure gets in the meat when it’s harvested.

Found in spinach and apple juice because of run-off from feed lots.

’72 – 50,000 inspections. Thousands of slaughter houses.

Today – less than 10,000 inspections.  Thirteen slaughterhouses,

Reduced funding for FDA.  Rely on self-policing from companies.

August 1st – E. coli found.  August 27th – recall.  16 days after Kevin died.

If plant repeatedly failed tests, they’d be shut down.  Usda was said not to have authority to shut down plants.

Kevin’s Law – USDA has the right to shut down repeat offenders.  Still hasn’t passed.

32,000 hogs are killed per day.  Smithfield.  As fast food demanded increases, the meat packers, who changed under Teddy Roosevelt to reform to one of the ebst jobs to have, began to flood back to their horrid ways and conditions.

Now recruiting new immigrants, Hispanics.  But when gov't cracks down on illegal immigration, they crack down on workers, not the companies hiring them.

How can you put a patent on seeds? 

Monsanto employs thugs to ensure farmers continue to use GMO's.  Farmers that don't use GMOs but have their fields infected by GMOs, they are still liable to be sued by the companies producing the seeds.

Monsanta blacklists farmers?  Do they call the farmers that don't support them Reds?  Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas - former Monsanto lawyer.  Bush and Clinton both had ties to the Monsanto corp.  Gov't is dominated by the industries it was meant to be regulating for the last 20 years.

Don't label, don't criticize.  Labeling is bad, m'kay?  People can be sued for making disparaging comments - Oprah paid $1 million in legal fees when she said she wouldn't eat any more hamburgers.  Criticize ground beef in Colorado, go to prison.  Can't publish photo of feed lot operation.

Cheeseburger bills - difficult to sue them.  Sue even though they can't win in order to send a message.
